Recently launched Nordic Baroque Scene (NBS) heads for its first international project in close collaboration with Norwegian Concert Hall Stormen in Bodø. An innovative and international singing competition will have a renowned jury and will be held biennially in Bodø.
Singing competition that embraces period music in a broad way
Nordic Baroque Scene (NBS) is looking to create top quality projects through cooperating with institutions within the classical music field. The collaboration’s first endeavour is Aria Borealis Bodø – an original and innovative baroque singing competition created jointly with Stormen Concert Hall in Bodø, Norway. Bodø will be the European Capital of Culture in 2024, and already in June 2022 Stormen will host a major event of Nordic sound and music tradition in which the first edition of Aria Borealis Bodø will play a major part.
“Baroque music has an undeniable connection to other past and current musical genres and practices. This ambitious international event highlights and celebrates the musical diversity of early music and its ability to speak directly to us in a contemporary setting. With Aria Borealis Bodø, our vision is to combine our singing competition with performances, workshops, and a friendly environment for everyone. We are looking forward to warmly welcoming performers, guests and audiences from all over the world to be with us in Bodø and Stormen Concert Hall in the summer of 2022. We plan to offer our guests a top-notch programme of musical meetings, conversations and the exchanging of ideas”, says the CEO of Stormen, Rasmus Adrian.
The competition jury consists of renowned musicians and artists such as soprano Dame Emma Kirkby, cembalist and the Artistic Director of Concerto Copenhagen Lars Ulrik Mortensen, stage director Stefan Herheim, soprano Tuuli Lindeberg and tenor Anders Dahlin. More about the competition and the official website of the competition will be announced on 25th August when the opening of the competition will be held in Helsinki, Finland.
The aim of Aria Borealis Bodø International Baroque Singing Competition is to encourage singers to specialize in early music performance and promote early music in general with a special focus on the interwoven musicianship between singers and ensemble. The competition will have a new form which enhances communication between the singer and other musicians as well as communication with the audience. Core of the competition will build around the baroque repertoire but will also include elements of folk music.
Nordic Baroque Scene (NBS) is a new collaboration platform for four Nordic baroque orchestras from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Barokkanerne, Concerto Copenhagen (CoCo), Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble (DBE) and Finnish Baroque Orchestra (FiBO) have come together to strengthen the Nordic baroque scene with aims to develop a new and long-lasting collaboration on several areas, such as networking, financing, audience development, working possibilities and resources. The main projects are coordinated by the Finnish production company Teatro Productions.
